The
interest in Industrial Ecology and its application through Eco-Industrial
Development is increasing throughout Asia receiving great attention
from estate developers, the industrial community and government authorities.
The first Regional Conference in Manila, Philippines in April 2001
organized by the UNDP-PRIME Project, ICAST, and the University of
Kaiserslautern, and other international partners entitled
"NEW STRATEGIES FOR INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT-LEARNING FROM PIONEER
EXPERIENCES IN ECO-NETWORKING IN ASIA" resulted with a
clear demand for networking in the Asia-Pacific region to support
the growing initiatives in Asian countries.
Since
January 2003, the UNDP Environmental Management Programme for Industry
Competitiveness (EPIC) has been formally hosting the secretariat in
Manila, Philippines in cooperation with the German Technical Cooperation
(GTZ) to meet this need for regional communication and exchange of
experience. The Secretariat will facilitate eco-industrial initiatives
in the Asia-Pacific Region through information exchange through this
website.
